The Estate

The Louis family has grown wine in the south-east of Sancerre for four generations. The domaine traces its beginnings to Eric Louis's great-grandmother Pauline, who founded the estate in 1890 and later gave her name to Les Celliers de la Pauline and to the family's special Sancerre cuvée. Eric Louis now carries that history forward through a flagship range spanning Sancerre and the wider Centre-Loire.

Vineyard

The domaine's Sancerre vineyard covers about 35 hectares divided among roughly 60 parcels around Thauvenay, Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre and Vinon. The vines sit near the Loire along the Thauvenay geological fault and cross Sancerre's major soil families: Kimmeridgian terres blanches, limestone caillottes and clay-siliceous soils rich in flint. Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir are farmed parcel by parcel, allowing the domaine to either isolate a single terroir or blend sites for greater complexity.

Sustainability

Sancerre and Quincy certified organic under Ecocert. No herbicides or insecticides; vineyard work includes tillage, hoeing, grass cover, mating disruption, disbudding and bunch thinning. The estate also uses cover crops and biodiversity-focused practices.

Cellar & People

Eric Louis combines traditional Sancerre know-how with a modern, highly controlled cellar. Grapes are harvested at night or early in the morning to preserve freshness, then gently pressed and fermented in temperature-controlled vessels. The estate tracks juice by parcel, uses bioprotection to limit sulphites during fermentation, and protects wines under nitrogen through aging and bottling. Red wines may be raised in selected oak from Tronçais and Bertranges, while the exceptional white Sancerre Cuvée Pauline follows an ancestral approach with fermentation and aging in acacia and oak.
